Subject, Audience & Purpose
My Chosen Subject
For my Major Project I knew I would have to pick a subject that I have a passion for so it was immediately clear to me my project would revolve around cars in some way, after reviewing the example options I soon realised that designing my own brand would be the perfect way to demonstrate my skills. So I inevitably chose to design a car brand from scratch along with all the resources you would expect from such a full fledged brand for example the brand guidelines, logo, product designs, website/ social media and some marketing material; in which I intend to make use of 3D software to achieve a semi realistic car commercial style form of media.
Purpose
When it came down to determining the purpose of the brand, I started looking towards current brands and what was missing from that market. After a while of doing my research it was soon clear that the gap in the market and therefore purpose of my brand was the lack of High-End, British, Luxury Small cars on the market, and just in general. due to manufacturing costs not many cars in general are actually built in the UK even cars that claim to be are only “Assembled in the UK” with all the parts being manufactured elsewhere. So in the spirit of that I decided to design my brand based around this idea of being a pure british automobile. This sparked many ideas about the direction I could take the brand and how to link it to history potentially even going back as far as the country itself taking design inspiration from the Romans/ Anglo Saxons or old english fairy tales like dragons, as I believe this could be a very interesting was to explore new interesting design structures for the cars and brand as a whole.
Audience
My target Audience for the brand as a whole will be the more affluent side of England, pitching alongside companies like BMW, Mercedes, Lexus and Audi. Being a new company it does have a few disadvantages of not being tied to extensive history behind the brand like mercedes 2.(founded by one of the creators of the first automobile i.e Karl Benz). However I aim to overlook that fact by creating the brand with british history in mind which in theory should synonomise the brand with british patriotism. This is a desirable effect as generally people associate things built locally as higher quality, feeding into the higher price point luxury sense I aim to create around the brand.
